Gestural Interface

The Gestural Interface provides an alternative method for graphically modifying objects on the canvas. It can be particularly useful when leveling resources or for using touch-based input, such as a stylus on a tablet computer.

It offers controls for decreasing or increasing the duration of an activity (known as crashing/extending), and for moving one or more objects horizontally (known as pushing/pulling) or vertically (known as shifting). Such incremental fine-tuning can be difficult to achieve when using the mouse. And using the arrow keys lacks the transparency and can result in unintentional consequences.

Crashing & Extending Activities

Open the Gestural Interface window by clicking the Gestural icon Gestural Icon in the toolbar. The Gestural Interface window opens.

the gestural interface

Select any activities on the canvas. Durations may be crashed or extended in increments of time or percent.

To crash/extend by units of time, choose Days (or, if PolyTime is enabled, the corresponding time unit) from the dropdown and either type a number into the field or click the up and down arrow buttons accordingly.

To crash/extend by percentages, choose Percent from the dropdown and either type a number into the field or click the up and down buttons accordingly.

Crashing an activity’s duration can be achieved by clicking the innermost arrow to the left of the start node or right of the finish node. The opposite node will remain fixed, causing the duration to decrease.

Extending an activity’s duration can be achieved by clicking the outermost arrow to the left of the start node or right of the finish nod. The opposite node will remain fixed, causing the duration to increase.

Keyboard

Activities can also be crashed or extended using the keyboard. To crash or extend from the start of an activity, press and hold the L key and use either the LEFT arrow to extend or the RIGHT arrow to crash the activity.

To crash or extend from the finish of an activity, press and hold the R key and use either the LEFT arrow to crash or the RIGHT arrow to extend the activity.

NOTE: Only activities can be crashed/extended. If any other objects are selected, they will remain unchanged.

Pushing & Pulling Objects

Open the Gestural Interface window by clicking the Gestural icon Gestural Icon in the toolbar. The Gestural Interface window opens.

Select any objects on the canvas. Positions may only be moved in increments of time.

To push/pull, make sure Days (or, if PolyTime is enabled, the corresponding time unit) has been selected from the dropdown. Otherwise, the push/pull arrows will be disabled.

Then, type a number into the field or click the up and down buttons accordingly.

Pushing the dates of selected objects later can be achieved by clicking the right arrow button below the activity. Any selected objects will be delayed by the specified increment.

Pulling the dates of selected objects earlier can be achieved by clicking the left arrow button below the activity. Any selected objects will advance by the specified increment.

Or, simply use the keyboard left and right arrows to push and pull respectively.

NOTE: There is a significant difference between moving a block of activities using the mouse vs. using the arrow keys (or Gestural Interface window). The latter will move them according to working days (or time units) as opposed to calendar days (or time units). Thus, if activities with different calendars are pushed/pulled, they will appear to move at different rates on the schedule. See Block Moves for more details.

Tip:  If optimizing or performing what-if scenarios, it is recommended to use an increment of no greater than 10. Large increments should only be used in specific situations (e.g. if a window is missed and the network must be delayed a year).

Shifting Objects Vertically

Open the Gestural Interface window and select any objects on the canvas.

Shifting selected objects vertically can be achieved by clicking the up ↑ and down ↓ arrow buttons. Any selected objects will move up or down one grid at a time.

Or, simply use the keyboard up and down arrows.
