Printing and Presenting

There are several things to consider when building a schedule so that data elements are presented clearly and efficiently. These guidelines are devised to promote best-practice graphic display and to summarize available features that increase the clarity and efficiency of the data presented.

A schedule will print exactly as it appears when the zoom and stretch are set to 100. Many schedules, however, are too complex to be read at such a scale. Zooming and stretching will enhance readability on a digital display, but will have no effect on the printed page. To do so, it is recommended to adjust the page size or apply page tiling.

Print Preview for Tiled Page Setup

The print preview feature is most useful for plans tiled to print on multiple pages. When selected, it displays the letter/number sequence in red in the center of each page and the page breaks in red as solid lines through the canvas.

The letter indicates the horizontal sequence; the number indicates the vertical sequence; and the number in parentheses indicates the page number for printing specific tiles.

To turn on print preview, select File > Print Preview from the menu bar. The plan is adjusted to fit the screen automatically, and the Schedule Zoom & Stretch window opens.

Minimize Cascading

In general, related activities should be placed on the same horizontal grid line to maximize the planning surface and to convey a more intuitive representation of the network. They should not cascade downward as is shown with the bottom example.

Attention to Link Geometry

Link shape can play a big role in determining the readability and coherence of network relationships. The link geometry may be chosen from the toolbar icon menu, from the Properties section of the Link Object window, and by right-clicking on an existing link.

Adjusting the Calendar Start & End Dates

When a new schedule loads, half of the project start and project completion boxes are cut off from the field of view. To adjust them, click the Schedule Properties icon Schedule Properties Icon or Schedule > Modify Settings… to open the Schedule Properties window. Here, set the calendar start and calendar end dates just outside the project start and completion dates.

Choosing the Calendar Strips & Sightlines

To clarify what portions of the planning surface correspond to different calendar dates (indicated by the calendar strips at the top of the canvas), choose Sightlines to be displayed on the canvas where desired. To do so, click the Schedule Properties icon Schedule Properties Icon or Schedule > Modify Settings… from the menu bar.

In the Displays tab, select the desired checkboxes in the Calendar Strips list-box to add strips at the corresponding time units at the top of the canvas. Similarly, make the desired selections for sightlines.

Setting the Alignment Grid

The alignment grid controls the amount of vertical space between adjacent horizontal gridlines on the canvas that objects align to. To change, click the Schedule Properties icon Schedule Properties Icon or Schedule > Modify Settings… to open the Schedule Properties window. Click the Formatting tab and adjust the Grid Spacing.

Canvas Color

To change, click the Schedule Properties icon Schedule Properties Icon or Schedule > Modify Settings… to open the Schedule Properties window. Click the Formatting tab and adjust the Canvas Color.

Global Text Size

To modify global text size of the plan, select Objects > Change Text Size for all Objects (does not apply to text boxes or annotations).

Object Descriptions

Short descriptions are preferred in order to avoid the text from extending beyond the width of the activity bar.

If a description must be a certain length (and is composed of multiple words) and appears too long, try stacking words by pressing Enter to send words to the start of a new line.

Images

Add any graphic or Image via File > Insert Image File(s)… to copy or cut and then paste onto the canvas. Once pasted, an image can be moved, scaled by the select handles, deleted, and restored by right-click.
